Magazine Advert Research

Alongside my music video, I have been set the task of creating two separate ancillary products to go alongside my music video. These two products are a DigiPak and a Magazine Adverts. I will make sure the general aesthetic look runs through these three products in order to create continuity throughout.

In order to generate ideas, I must first research into already existing Magazine Advertisements and DigiPaks. This will help me gather an idea of common convention that I may follow or challenge.

Convention of magazine adverts:
  • Release date
  • Album/Song title
  • Image of album cover
  • Artist name
  • Information about album
  • Where it is available to purchase
  • Record label logo and potentially further information

King of Leon - Only by the Night

The image shown on the right is an example of a magazine advert for Kings of Leon's album 'only by the night'. The image on the left is the album cover for that album. As we can evidently see, there is a clear correlation between the two images and there is an obvious theme running throughout both. This is a common convention for all genres of music.  The magazine advert includes: the band name, the album name, the album cover and singles that are included within the album.

Killers - 'Day and Age'

The image shown on the left is the magazine advert for the Killers' album 'day and age'. The image shown on the right is the album cover. Again we can see a clear correlation in terms of style and theme linking to the common convention of magazine adverts. The magazine advert includes: the band name, the album name and a featuring single included within the album. There also looks to be a logo of presumably a record label and the killers' website.

Tom Odell - Long Way Down

This is another example of how the theme of the album matches the theme of the magazine ad. The magazine advert photograph is just a cropped version of the album cover photograph. The magazine advert in this case includes: release date, awards won, record label logos, artist name and album name.
All matching conventions.

 Wretch 32 - Wretchrospective

A trait noticed in most grime and R&B magazine and album covers is that the male looks away from the camera, usually depicting a side on profile which gives off a careless demeanour about the artist. In an attempt to promote the album further there is a list of other well known and famous artists that it features, which in turn, promotes the artists success and popularity. Instant knowledge of where the audience is able to purchase the album from, is a clear example of conventional information found on magazine adverts in an attempt to boost sales. The artist Wretch links the album title to his name the word ‘wretch’ forming a pun in his album heading, this will be an attempt to grab the readers attention. The city blocks in the background give off connotations of him being ahead of the rest of the city, another common trait among grime and hip hop album covers and magazines
