Alongside my music video, I have been set the task of creating two separate ancillary products to go alongside my music video. These two products are a DigiPak and a Magazine Adverts. I will make sure the general aesthetic look runs through these three products in order to create continuity throughout.
In order to generate ideas, I must first research into already existing Magazine Advertisements and DigiPaks. This will help me gather an idea of common convention that I may follow or challenge.
Drum and Bass Digi-Packs
Album Cover
We can denote that this album cover is rather basic as it only consists of one photograph and block titles. Chase and Status have a general them of social realism and a 'street' affect. British bulldogs are stereotypically associated with violence, intimidation and protection giving this album cover a 'street' kind of look. The yellow block titles could connote hazard warnings and danger, which relates to the photograph of the bulldog and again displaying themes of danger and violence. The bulldog is symbolising British patriotism.
CD
In terms of the CD, the general them is the same at the album cover. There is a simplistic yellow block font (same as cover) and a black background including both the artist name and album name. The black background makes the yellow titles stand even more. There is a small relation to the British Bulldog as there is a small edit of a dog stood on a crown. The CD looks to also contain what looks like the music labels and companies involved with the making of the Album.
Back of Album Cover
We can denote from this back cover that there is again the same theme of black with yellow block writing running throughout the album. On the spine swell the theme is included (black with yellow titles. The back cover includes the barcode, track listing, record labels and publishing information.
Chase and status use this theme for the singles of their albums. They include yellow block titles, black and white photos and working class/street photography.
Album Cover
We can denote from this Chase and Status album cover similar themes from the one analysed above. Again the them is highly simplistic only involving titles, one coloured background and one photograph edited in the middle. The titles are block titles that stand out onto of the bright orange/red coloured background. The photograph looks to be a cork with a smiley face on. The colour of the photograph looks to be slightly distorted and makes the smiley face stand out.
CD
In terms of the CD, the same colour theme and titles as the album cover are included (orange/red coloured background and Block, black titles). Like the first other Chase and Status album, the artist name is above the album name in a similar style. There is also writing around the edges most likely including publishing information such as year of release, record label etc.
Back of Album Cover
Again on the back cover the theme is running throughout (orange/red background and black titles). Like most backs to album covers, it includes the track listing, barcode and publishing information. The spine includes the artist and the album name matching the common convention of spines.
Album Cover
We can denote that this album cover is rather simplistic matching the common connection of simplisity within drum and bass album covers. There is a limited colour palette involved including basic colours. This is all computer edited design as there are no photographs involved. The name of the album is 'Sub Focus' which is also the artist name. The font is thin and the one colour of white. Behind the disc shape there is a black background helping the title stand out. Altogether this album cover contains complexity within editing but gives the album cover a simplistic look.
Album Back Cover
We can denote from the back of this album cover that it matches the common conventions of the drum and bass genre. The general theme matches the front cover of a black background with slight involvement of basic colours. The back includes a track listing, publishing information and a barcode (common conventions). - altogether highly basic/simple back cover.
Contrasting Genres Digi-Packs
Mumford and Sons (folk rock band):
Album Cover
From this album cover we can see a clear contrast between the dig-packs of different genres. The cover consists of a photograph of what looks to be a shop. The band members feature in this cover as they are stood in the window of the shop pretending to be mannequins. Like most album covers, it includes the titles and artist name. The artist font is larger than album name (common convention). The cover doesn't appear to include any form of obvious editing (possibly edited lighting).
The back cover matches the theme of the front cover on a much more basic scale. We can denote the back cover includes a photograph of a window (matching the photo of buildings on the front). It also includes track listing, barcode and publishing information. The spine includes the artist and album name and record label logos (common conventions).
Kodaline (indie rock band):
Album Cover
We can denote from this album cover a clear professionalism of photography. It includes a scenic photograph of a lake with mountains surrounding it. Photographs are commonly found on covers of indie, rock, folk music and unlikely to seen on a cover of drum and bass. Following the common conventions of covers in general, this album cover includes the artist and album name (artist name bigger than album name). The photograph has relation to the album name 'In a Perfect World', as the picture includes a pleasant/nice place. This cover contrasts a drum and bass album cover in the sense that much more complexity is
The back cover also includes a scenic shot of a lake and mountain however at night. The back cover includes a barcode, publishing information and a track listing.
