Motion Capture Testing

Motion Capture is the tool on after affects that allows us to animate emoji masks onto our characters.

In order for the emoji face to follow to action of the face of the character, we had to create something that the motion capture could track. So we innovated and quickly created a headset with a small piece of paper with a cross on the headset. The small cross on the paper was the thing that allowed the tool to follow the movement of the head. We experienced a couple of problems that has given us an indication as to what to look out for when filming our production. Problems included:

  • Lighting - the camera was unable to see the small cross when the lighting was poor. This meant that the emoji face couldn't be tracked using motion capture. This has given us good indication as to what lighting works best helping with future filming.
  • Movement - When our actor made sudden movements, the motion capture found it difficult to track to cross as it moved very quickly. Now we know what works and what doesn't in terms of rapid movement benefitting us for future filming.
