Drum and bass music videos are generally different from other genres of music. A large amount of drum and bass music videos contain realism of all types of different cultures. The music videos therefore usually have a narrative. Videos usually feature extreme behaviour, partying, aggression and extreme sports. Chase and status are a prime example of this as most of their videos include realism such as 'Blind Faith', 'Alive', 'End Credits', 'Time' etc. Drum and bass music videos usually consist of fast face editing and jump cuts to match the fast pace of the music. The music videos also use little star treatment and performance unlike much more mainstream genres such as pop/rock etc.
Chase and Status - Blind Faith
This music video is an example of a drum and bass music video that contains high levels of realism. It is a music video set in the 90's during the illegal rave era. This era was largely associated with drug use and that can be witnessed when watching the music video. This is a large element of realism. Most of the footage is filmed hand held and made to look like raw footage giving it more of a real life affect. Matching the codes and conventions of drum and bass music videos, this video contains little star treatment as we only see Chase and Status for short snippets. It also contains fast paced editing and there is little relationship between lyrics and visuals. There is an obvious narrative within the music video matching the convention of drum and bass music videos.
Chase and Status - Alive
This is another example of a drum and bass music video that contains high levels of realism. The music video sees the struggle and pain of a young man who experiences poverty and gang issues. Its told greatly within the narrative as it has a clear, distinct storyline (matching common convention). There is very little star treatment which is commonly found within drum and bass videos and possible considered as a convention. The pace of editing matches the beat of the song (as the beat increases, the pace of edit increases) - this is another common convention of drum and bass music videos. There is minor/discrete relation between visuals and lyrics. "I feel so alive" - various aggressive confrontation. "as the rain keeps pouring down on me, and the sky is the only thing i see" - this indicates he's at one with nature, which is backed up by the inclusion of scenic locations. The relationship between lyrics and visuals can vary throughout drum and bass music videos.
